Diary of a Lagos-based Runs girl
.
Episode 4
15 04 2013
I wake up. Feeling weak. I feel like I've been in a dream. I don't understand. I stretch and feel something fall. A plate of food. I slowly look around.
The place doesn't look familiar. Where am I? I stand up, I'm perfectly fine. I see a wristwatch on the bed side table. It looks feminine. Is it mine? Maybe. The time is 3pm. There is a China phone beside the watch. I pick it up and press the end key,
the light comes up.
It's 15 04 2013. I don't understand. I don't understand anything. I can't remember anything. I walk to the bathroom and ease myself. Then I decide to shower. The water Is cold Maka chukwu. As I try to towel down, I hear a knock on the door. I
Quickly race to wear my clothes before opening the door. A very good-looking young girl walks in. "aunty good afternoon" she gushes. She has the
"igbati-igbati" tongue. She must be Yoruba, I deduced.
"How are you feeling today?" her question brings me back to the present.
"I'm feeling... Fine" I hesitate. I dunno why.
But there is something going on here, but I can't place it.
"ah, aunty I'm glad you're feeling fine o, since 4 days ago I've been the one feeding you and bathing you.
You remember the two guys that brought you shey? Wo, they gave me boku money to take care of you.
They say you involve for accident sef"
Accident? I can't process anything at all. Accident, how come? But I feel fine! There is absolutely nothing wrong with my body. No scratch. No wound. No pain.
I don't understand. Why then did I sleep for 4 days straight?
I ask her were this place is. She says it's a guest house in a place they call Akoka. She says the two guys paid for a month. I can stay here for 24 more days! I'm happy. But I don't know why something is
still ringing somewhere in my head.
She asks me where I'm from, she's rather chatty. I'm thinking about my 'accident' so I don't reply her.
She dresses the bed, brings a change of clothes for me and she leaves.
I sit down to accumulate everything the girl told me.
I'm still deep in thoughts when the phone rings. It startles me. I didn't notice the desk phone on the dressing table across the room. I walk the short distance and pick up the phone, not saying a word.
Until I hear the voice of the 'igbati' girl. I can't remember what her name was. Then she tells me that those two men were really in a hurry to leave. So they didn't fill the form that is a necessity for guests.
She then asks me what my name was, so she can help me fill it out.
And everything suddenly falls into place.
I don't know my name.
